Naturalization & Citizenship
There are various paths to become a U.S. citizen if you are a foreign national. Naturalization is when a lawful permanent resident becomes a citizen after residing in the United States for at least five years, or three years if they are married to and living with a U.S. citizen. A person can also acquire citizenship through one or both of their U.S. citizen parents.
There are specific eligibility requirements and steps to naturalize or acquire U.S. citizenship. This is one of many reasons why it is important to at least consult with a skilled immigration attorney before submitting your application. Some common obstacles to obtaining citizenship, or unique circumstances that provide a different path to citizenship, include applications for military members, children born abroad to at least one U.S. citizen parent, fraud issues in how the applicant obtained their underlying green card, criminal issues, failure to pay taxes or child support, the need for exemptions to taking the English and/or civics test, and more.
